  • Swelling that affects breathing or swallowing
  • Bleeding that won't stop
  • A serious injury to the face, jaw or head

Common Dental Emergencies

Here's what you can do until you see a dentist. You'll still need dental care to treat the problem.

  • Tooth Pain

Rinse with warm water. Floss gently to remove trapped food. If swollen, use a cold compress outside your cheek. Don't put aspirin or other painkillers on your tooth or gums; they can burn your gums. Call us.

  • Chipped or Broken Tooth

Save any pieces. Rinse your mouth and the pieces with warm water. Press gauze on bleeding for about 10 minutes. Use a cold compress on your cheek to reduce swelling. Call us.

  • Knocked-Out Tooth

Hold its crown (the part you chew with), not its root. Rinse briefly with water; don't scrub or remove tissue. Gently reinsert and hold it, or keep it in milk. Never reinsert baby teeth. Get urgent dental care. Call us.

  • Lost Filling or Crown

Keep the crown if you have it and bring it with you. Avoid chewing on that side. Call us.

  • Swelling or Gum Bump

Swelling or a gum bump may signal an infection, which can be serious. Rinse a few times with mild salt water (half a teaspoon of salt in a glass of warm water). Call us.

Treatments That May Help

We examine your tooth to find the cause and recommend treatment.

  • Root canals remove inflamed or infected tissue to help save your teeth.

  • Crowns protect weakened teeth, including teeth treated with a root canal.

  • Fillings repair teeth damaged by decay.

  • An extraction removes a tooth when we can't save it.
